Honoring the Fallen, Remembering the Sacrifice

Despite the heavy rain this Memorial Day weekend, our community gathered to do something far more important than enjoy a long holiday weekend- we came together to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Memorial Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a solemn reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today were purchased at a great cost. Generations of courageous Americans answered the call to serve, placing duty above self and country above comfort. Many never returned home. Their sacrifice is woven into the very fabric of this nation, and we owe them a debt that can never truly be repaid.

As I stood among fellow community members, veterans, and families, I was reminded that freedom is not free. It has always required ordinary men and women willing to do extraordinary things in defense of something greater than themselves.
This day is also deeply personal for me.
I want to take a moment to thank all those who have served and continue to serve our country. My appreciation begins with my father, a former Marine whose strength, discipline, and commitment helped shape the man I am today. His example taught me the value of responsibility, perseverance, and service to others. I am also grateful for my brothers, one who served in the Air Force and another in the Navy. Their willingness to answer the call to serve reflects the values that have long been a part of our family.
I would also like to recognize my Pastor Gary C.D. Jackson, Assistant Chaplain, for his spiritual leadership and service; community activist Arlene M. Doss, retired Master Sergeant, for her years of dedication and sacrifice; and my close friends Elijah Davis and Mateo Martinez, who continue to serve our nation with honor and commitment today. And the countless others whose names may not be listed here but whose service and sacrifice deserve our gratitude and respect.

As we reflect on Memorial Day, let us remember not only those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but also the families who carried the burden alongside them. Behind every service member is a family that has sacrificed time, comfort, and peace of mind in support of their loved one's commitment to this country.
May we never take for granted the freedoms we enjoy. May we honor the fallen not only with our words, but with the way we live our lives- serving our communities, caring for one another, and striving to leave this nation better than we found it.
God bless our veterans.
God bless our active-duty service members.
God bless the families who support them.
And may God continue to bless the United States of America.
